Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Today at the Worldwide Developer's Conference in San Francisco, Apple unveiled Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The updated version of the operating system will be available to current Mac OS X Leopard users in September 2009 for $29. The Apple website dubs Mac OS X Snow Leopard "The world's most advanced operating system. Finely tuned."

Here are some of the enhancements to the OS:

  • Greater Accessibility
  • Microsoft Exchange Support
  • Next Generation Technologies: 64-Bit, Grand Central Dispatch, Open CL
  • More responsive Finder
  • Smaller footprint, faster installation
  • Faster shut down and wake up
  • New version of QuickTime (QuickTime X)
  • Faster, more powerful Safari
  • And many more…

Some suggest that this new version of Mac OS X presents greater opportunity for the adoption of Apple for enterprise IT solutions. In his post on the ComputerWorld blog, Galen Gruman said, "Despite its public diffidence about enterprise adoption, Apple has made Snow Leopard an easier fit for the enterprise. ActiveSync support, the death of AppleTalk, and various security enhancements are of little use to the consumer audience that Apple formally targets." Also, with very few changes to the user-interface, Snow Leopard will not require a lot of re-training for current Mac users.

Would you consider Mac for your business IT needs?
