Yesterday Google revealed their next-generation search architecture, code-named Caffeine, which they have been secretly working on for several months. According to their Webmaster Central Blog, "it's the first step in a process that will let [Google] push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions."
The changes to the search engine infrastructure will be behind the scenes, so most users are not likely to notice a difference in their search experience. However, from a business standpoint these changes are very important as they will affect the way websites are ranked by Google, the obvious leader in the search market.
Google has invited users to try out the revised infrastructure and offer feedback. So if you are concerned about how these revisions will affect your SEO practices, you can search for your standard keywords using the web developer preview at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/
