First Reflections on Windows 7

As a mostly Mac person, I approached Windows 7 with much skepticism. My destination was a Windows 7 virtual machine under Parallels. I was a little concerned as there were postings on the Parallels site about issues...I also was drawing on my years of installation experiences of prior versions of Windows. Setting up XP could take a few hours.Windows 7 came close to being delightful to install. The initial install took less than 30 minutes. I then had to install the parallels tools to get networking to work. This was followed by get OS updates to get sound. However, I was prepared for this as I had read the Parallels forums. But, 40 minutes for a Windows install is pretty good. Then the pain began. I wanted to join our corporate network. 2 hours and a hotfix later, I finally got it to work. The bug is that if your domain has more than 15 characters, it will fail. Initially, I thought I was doing something wrong. I tried to reproduce the issue on XP, but it worked there. So, I knew something was amiss. Finding the right search words is the trick. (For reference the Knowledge Base Article is number 961402).First impression?  Looks nice. I skipped Vista, so I had to struggle a little with the changes in the Windows Explorer. The home location stuff seems a bit cumbersome. I was impressed that there were no major issues trying to get a Beta to run in a Parallels VM.Next comes installing some apps to make it actually useful, then I'll take it out for a spin. Let's see if it can handle some basic dev apps like TortoiseSVN and Eclipse.
